Seattle's weather (rain, road grime and the occasional sunshine) takes a toll on your car's paint. Whether you commute through the city, head to the mountains on weekends, or just want your car to look its best, a ceramic coating can help. It isn't the right fit for everyone, though, and it isn't magic.
We've installed Ceramic Pro coatings at APC Auto Spa for years, and we'd rather you know the downsides before you buy than after. Here's the honest list. If you're mainly weighing the cost, our post on whether a ceramic coating is worth the investment breaks down the numbers.
The weather in Seattle is unpredictable!
The Pros of Ceramic Coatings
Weather and chemical protection: A coating helps shield your paint from UV fading, road grime, tree sap and bird droppings, which can etch the clear coat if they sit. Think of it as an invisible raincoat for your paint, one that actually works.
Much easier washing: Dirt and water don't hold on to a coated surface, so washes are faster, easier and less frequent. It's like cooking on a non-stick pan.
Gloss and depth: A coating gives your paint a deep, glossy finish that looks freshly detailed long after you leave the shop. Fair warning: you may start parking farther away from other cars.
Years, not weeks: Wax wears off in weeks or months. A professional coating bonds to the paint and lasts for years with proper care.
A sacrificial layer: The coating takes the day-to-day wear so your factory clear coat doesn't. That means less polishing over the life of the car, and every polish removes a little clear coat you can't get back.
Documented for resale: Coatings installed at APC are reported to CARFAX, so the next buyer can see your paint was professionally protected.
More than paint: Our coating packages also cover the faces of your wheels, so brake dust rinses off more easily, plus exterior plastics and the windshield. ION packages coat all of the glass.
Hydrophobic means repels water
The Cons of Ceramic Coatings
It won't stop rock chips: A coating resists light marring and swirls, but a rock at highway speed goes right through it, and deeper scratches can still happen. Impact protection is the job of paint protection film. Many owners put film on the front of the car and a coating on the rest.
You still have to wash your car: A coating makes washing easier, not optional. Bird droppings, sap and bugs still need to come off promptly.
A yearly visit pays off: Coatings are low maintenance, not no maintenance. Annual maintenance extends every coating warranty to its full term, and skipping it shortens your coverage. For example, a Silver coating's 5-year warranty drops to 2 years without it, and a lifetime Ultimate ION warranty drops to 7 years.
No washing for the first 7 to 10 days: Your car goes home the same day and can be driven and get wet, but the coating needs 7 to 10 days to cure before its first wash.
Prep matters, and it takes time: A coating locks in whatever is underneath it. That's why every package at APC includes a decontamination wash and a single-stage machine polish first, and why most coatings take a full day in the shop.
The upfront cost is higher: A professional coating costs more than wax or a DIY kit. Whether it pays off depends on how you drive, park and wash your car, which is exactly what we'll ask you about.
Not every surface is covered by the warranty: For example, ceramic coatings on unpainted stainless steel, like a Cybertruck's body, aren't covered by warranty.
Bugs stuck to the front bumper after a long road trip. If not removed they will etch the paint!
Professional Coating, Ceramic Pro Sport, or a DIY Kit?
Professional coating packages give you the most gloss, protection and longevity, with a multi-year warranty. The prep, polish and application are all handled for you. See the current packages on our ceramic coatings page.
The Ceramic Pro Sport package is its own service: an exterior detail finished with Ceramic Pro Sport, a true Ceramic Pro coating, instead of the sealant used on our standard Full Exterior Detail. It adds real gloss and water-beading protection with a 6-month warranty from Ceramic Pro. It doesn't reach the level of our coating packages in gloss, protection or longevity, but it's a great fit if you want more than a detail without committing to a multi-year coating. You'll find it on our auto detailing page.
DIY kits cost less up front, but they're easy to get wrong. Streaks, high spots and trapped dirt can be costly to fix, and DIY coatings usually don't last as long or come with a warranty.
How to Care for a Ceramic Coating
Wash every two weeks if you can, and at least once a month: Use a pH-neutral car soap to lift dirt and grime safely. If you live in a condo or apartment without a place to wash, a waterless wash product works well.
Hand wash first, touchless second: A hand wash is the best way to clean any coated vehicle. When you can't hand wash, a touchless car wash is the next best option.
Skip brushes and harsh cleaners: Brush-style car washes, stiff brushes and harsh chemicals can scratch or wear down the coating. Stick to coating-safe products.
Dry it properly: Skip air drying. Water spots can damage your coating and even the clear coat underneath. Use a clean microfiber towel or a blower.
Book Annual Maintenance: Once a year, we give the coating a full decontamination wash with clay, apply a fresh hydrophobic Top Coat, and recoat the windshield if you'd like. That visit keeps your coating performing like day one and keeps your warranty in effect. APC Membership builds your Annual Maintenance credit with each paid payment and includes hand washes.

Is a Ceramic Coating Right for You?
A coating is a smart choice if you care how your car looks, want protection that lasts for years, and like the idea of spending less time washing, as long as you're willing to keep up with a yearly maintenance visit. If rock chips are your biggest worry, start with paint protection film. If you're not sure, that's what we're here for: we'll ask how you drive, park and wash your car, and tell you honestly what makes sense, including when a detail or Ceramic Pro Sport is all you need.
