In a gas car, air conditioning costs you a little fuel, and the engine is making plenty of heat anyway. In an electric vehicle, every bit of cooling comes out of the same battery that gets you home. That changes the math on window tint. For an EV owner, tint is not only about looks, privacy or a cooler seat. It is about how hard the car has to work to keep the cabin comfortable, and where that energy comes from.
Here is what heat actually costs an EV, what window tint can and can't do about it, and how we approach tint on electric vehicles at our Monroe and Tukwila shops.
AAA tested three EVs in a climate-controlled lab in 2026, holding the cabin at 72 degrees while the room around the cars ran at 75 and then 95 degrees. At 95 degrees, the EVs lost about 10 percent of their efficiency and about 8.5 percent of their driving range compared to the 75-degree runs. AAA pointed to the energy spent cooling both the cabin and the battery pack as the main reason. (Cold weather was much harder on range, which is worth knowing for a Northwest winter, but that is a different story.)
One detail matters for tint: that test was done indoors, without the sun beating down on the glass. Out in a parking lot, sunlight pours through the windows, heats the seats, dash and steering wheel, and the car has to pull all of that heat back out. The lab numbers are a floor, not a ceiling.
You might be thinking that 95-degree days are rare around Seattle. They are, but they are not as rare as they used to be, and the 2021 heat dome showed how quickly a parked car turns into an oven here. More often, the issue is a 78-degree afternoon with full sun on a car parked at work or at Costco. That is enough to cook an interior with a lot of glass.
Many EVs keep working after you walk away, and that is where heat control really adds up.
Other EVs have their own versions of these features. The principle is the same: the hotter the cabin gets, the more energy the car spends fighting it.
Think of your car like a cooler. The A/C is the ice. Better insulation doesn't make the ice colder; it just means you burn through less of it. Quality window film is insulation for your glass.
Sunlight carries heat in two ways you can feel: visible light, and infrared, which you can't see but feel as warmth on your skin. A ceramic infrared film blocks a large share of that infrared before it reaches the cabin, so the interior starts cooler, heats up more slowly, and takes less work to bring back down. That can mean:
Let's be clear about what tint does not do. It does not make your battery healthier or add miles to an EPA rating. We are not going to promise you a specific number of miles back, because that depends on your car, your climate settings, where you park and how much sun your glass sees. What tint does is cut the heat the car has to fight, so less of your charge goes to cooling and more goes to driving.
With an infrared film, much of the heat rejection comes from blocking infrared rather than from how dark the film looks. That matters for EV owners who want the benefit without the blacked-out look. We stock our Ceramic IR film in 15, 25, 35 and 70 percent. The 70 is light enough that most people won't notice it's there, and it still does real work against heat.
Washington law also limits how dark you can go, and the rules differ between cars and SUVs. A Model 3 or Model S is a car; a Model Y or Model X is an SUV, and rear-window rules are different for each. The same film that keeps heat out in July also lets a little less sunshine warm your cabin on a clear January morning. In the Northwest, with our short, gray winter days, that effect is small, and heating an EV is driven far more by cold air than by missing sunshine. We would rather you hear it from us.
A lot of EVs, especially Teslas, have large glass roofs, and owners naturally ask about tinting them. We don't tint Tesla glass roofs. The factory glass already has UV protection, and adding film to a large panel of roof glass can create uneven heating and stress that we don't want to risk on your car. If roof heat bothers you, a fitted sunshade for parked days is the simple, safe answer.
